Foundation Mistakes Everybody Makes

When it comes to applying makeup, foundation is easily overlooked. However, it’s arguably the most important step of all, as it’s the one that gets the rest of your makeup off on the right foot. And what’s surprising is just how many people make critical mistakes when laying on this base layer. With that in mind, we asked the skincare and beauty researchers at Adore Cosmetics about the common foundation mistakes that people make. Here’s what they had to say.

#1 Using the Wrong Tools
Many women opt for that little triangle-shaped sponge or even their fingers when it’s time to apply foundation. However, investing some money in a good foundation brush is really the way to go. Both the sponge and your fingers tend to be too heavy-handed and not subtle with the foundation that goes on your face. A lighter touch from a good brush is a better solution.

#2 Applying It All over the Face
Contrary to popular belief, your entire face does not need to be a mask of foundation that acts as the base layer for all makeup. Rather, it’s really intended to tone down problem area around the eyes, chin, nose and cheeks. Keep that in mind as you reach for the foundation brush.

#3 Going Too Light
Yes, foundation should be a good match to the skin so that it looks as natural as possible. But one small click darker can often be a good idea and still create a beautiful, natural look. The touch of tone is better at hiding blemishes and smoothing out other problem areas in a very subtle way.

#4 Using Powder Foundation
Powder may work for some makeup, but really a liquid foundation is the way to go for smoothing and evening out the entire face. Powder makeup can be drying and even highlight wrinkles if it collects within them.
